BIOGRAPHY:

Mathieu de Bakker, former Grocyn Lecturer and fellow of Wadham College, is currently employed as university lecturer at the university of Amsterdam, where he teaches ancient Greek literature, language and linguistics. His areas of expertise are the historians and orators, whose texts he investigates from a narratological and intertextual perspective. In 2007 he defended his doctoral thesis Speech and Authority in Herodotus' Histories (www.dare.uva.nl), which will be published in 2010. Furthermore, he has published two translations of Seneca (in Dutch) and lectured on various aspects of ancient Greek for a wider audience. In 2009 he won the Lecturer of the year award of his university.
