BIOGRAPHY:

John Briscoe was born in London and educated at Mill Hill School and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he took his undergraduate and doctoral degrees. He was a Junior Research Fellow and College Lecturer at Corpus from 1962 to 1968, when he moved to the University of Manchester. Successively Lecturer in Greek and Latin, Senior Lecturer in Greek and Latin, and Reader in Latin, he is now an Honorary Research Fellow. In 2014 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea. He has published four volumes of commentary on Livy, covering books 31‒45 (OUP 1973, 1981, 2008, 2012) and four critical editions (Livy 21‒25 (OCT 2016), 31‒40, 41‒45 (Teubner 1991, 1986), Valerius Maximus (Teubner 1998)), and made substantial contributions to Fragments of the Roman Historians (OUP 2013). A longstanding member of the British Labour Party, he was a member of Oxford City Council from 1962 to 1968.
