BIOGRAPHY:

Roland Mayer is Emeritus Professor of Classics at King’s College London. He has written widely on a number of Roman authors, chiefly of the early Principate. He has compiled commentaries on Horace’s first books of Epistles (Cambridge 1994) and Odes (Cambridge 2012), on Seneca’s Phaedra (Cambridge 1990), on Lucan’s Civil War VIII (Warminster 1981), and on Tacitus’ Dialogus de Oratoribus (Cambridge 2001). He has also written an introductory work to Seneca’s Phaedra (London 2002). His research embraces philological, literary, and cultural issues, as well as reception, most notably the Stoic interpretation of Senecan tragedy and the ruins of Rome. Mayer was elected Honorary Secretary of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies in 2017.
