BIOGRAPHY:
John R. Patterson is Senior Lecturer (Ancient History) in the Faculty of Classics, University of Cambridge, and Director of Studies in Classics at Magdalene and Lucy Cavendish Colleges. Before arriving in Cambridge, he studied at Magdalen College, Oxford, and at the British School at Rome. His main areas of research are the City of Rome in antiquity and the history of Roman Italy; publications include Samnites, Ligurians and Romans (1988), Political Life in the City of Rome (2000) and Landscapes and Cities: rural settlement and civic transformation in early imperial Italy (2006). He has written survey articles for the Journal of Roman Studies on 'The City of Rome: from Republic to Empire' (vol. 82 (1992), 186-215; vol. 100 (2010), 210-232), and (with E. Curti & E. Dench) on 'The archaeology of central and southern Roman Italy: recent trends and approaches' (vol. 86 (1996), 170-189).
