Kathryn Betts Adams: Biographical Information for Oxford Online Bibliography, Sept. 2013. Kathryn Betts Adams received her B.A. from Macalester College, her MSW from the University of Michigan, and her PhD in Social Work in 2001 from the University of Maryland. Kathryn practiced as a social worker for nearly ten years in mental health, aging and substance abuse settings. She was a faculty member at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Cleveland, Ohio, from 2003 to 2013, and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in July, 2011. At CWRU, she regularly taught a master’s level course in social work practice with older adults, courses in adult mental health practice and human behavior theory, and a doctoral course on the research and theory basis of social work. Kathryn’s research focuses on geriatric depression, activity and aging, family caregiving, and coping with chronic illness in later life. She was selected as a Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholar in 2006, which led to her study examining characteristics and predictors of sub-threshold depression among older adults in Cleveland-area congregate housing facilities. In 2013, Kathryn left CWRU to join her spouse in Southern California, where she is transitioning from academic faculty member to the work of consulting, editing, and writing, while enjoying the sunshine and ocean breezes. She has a blog about mid-life and aging for Psychology Today at www.psychologytoday.com/experts/kathryn-betts-adams-phd-msw.
