BIOGRAPHY:
Dr. John R. Spencer is Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies from the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at John Carroll University, University Heights, Ohio. He received his Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible from the University of Chicago and other degrees from the University of California, Berkeley and Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley. He taught undergraduate and graduate course at John Carroll in the fields of Bible, ancient Near Eastern History and Religions, and Archaeology. He directed the Honors Program for many years, served as chair of his department, and directed the Walter and Mary Tuohy Chair of Interreligious Studies. He served on the staffs of archaeological excavations at Tell el-Hesi and Ashkelon and is a member and officer of the board of the W. F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research and of the board of the Council of Overseas Research Centers. He was also the President of the Cleveland Archaeological Society. He has published books, articles, and reviews in the fields of Hebrew Bible and archaeology. His most recent publication was “Material Culture Matters.” He continues to write, research, and lecture in his field.
