BIOGRAPHY:
Hugh French is an earth scientist who has conducted research in the cold non-glacial regions of the world for over 45 years. Between 1967 and 2003 he taught at the University of Ottawa in the Departments of Geography, Geology and Earth Sciences and was Dean of the Faculty of Sciences. He is now Professor Emeritus, University of Ottawa, and currently an Adjunct Professor, Department of Geography, University of Victoria. He was President of the International Geographical Union Periglacial Commission, 1980-1988, President of the International Permafrost Association, 1998-2003, and the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Wiley journal, Permafrost and Periglacial Processes, 1990-2005. He is the author of The Periglacial Environment, first published in 1976 and now in its 3rd edition (2007). He lives with his wife Jill and their dog, Mitzi, on the Saanich Peninsula, southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
