BIOGRAPHY:
Mariko Kotani (Ph.D. in Communication, Temple University) is Lecturer of Communication at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo. She studies how people deal with potentially problematic situations across cultures, focusing on phenomena such as exchanges of accounts and apologies, repair, compliments, assessments, and epistemology in social interaction. She uses ethnography of communication as a framework using in-depth interviews and conversation analysis as methods of research. Her areas are intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, conversation analysis, discourse analysis, and ethnography. Her work has appeared in Research on Language and Social Interaction, Journal of Intercultural Communication Research, Pragmatics and Society, and the International Encyclopedia of Communication among others. She has taught at Rikkyo University and Tsuda University in Tokyo and Temple University in Philadelphia.
