BIOGRAPHY:
Sophie Benn is a musicologist, cellist, and baroque cellist currently based in Cleveland, USA. Her academic research focuses on relationships between music and the body in notational systems, science, and dance theory around 1900, in Europe and the United States. Sophie has forthcoming chapters in The Routledge Companion to Choreomusicology and the volume Bodies and Sounds in Motion. She currently serves as the Chair of the Dance Studies Association’s Dance and Music Working Group and on the editorial board for the journal Sonic Scope. As a performer, she is the Director of Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project (CUSP), a presenting organization for experimental music and sound art, and the principal cellist of the chamber orchestra CityMusic Cleveland. She also plays baroque cello, regularly appearing with members of Apollo’s Fire and Les Delices. Sophie is a PhD Candidate in Musicology at Case Western Reserve University, and holds degrees in cello performance, pedagogy, and music history from Rice University and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Starting August 2021, she will be Assistant Professor of Musicology at Western Kentucky University.
