BIOGRAPHY:
Herbert C. Covey earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1979. He taught classes on juvenile delinquency and gangs at the University of Colorado for over 20 years. He began in career in criminal justice and served on the State Juvenile Parole Board for 13 years. He has numerous journal articles in criminal justice, gerontology, and child welfare. He authored Crips and Bloods, Street Gangs Throughout the World (2nd edition), and co-authored Young Gangs (4th edition). His other books address black history, history of disabilities, and methamphetamine use. His most recent research and publications focus on child maltreatment and the long-term effects of exposure to violence. Currently, he is the Deputy Director of a Department of Human Services.
