BIOGRAPHY:

Leena Alanen is a sociologist and professor emerita in Early Childhood Education, and Adjunct Professor (Docent) in sociology, at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Since the 1980s, she has been active in developing Childhood Studies, through her own research and in national and international research projects, as well as in international sociological associations (ISA, ESA). In 1998-2002 she served as the President of the ISA Research Committee 53: Sociology of Childhood. She is a member of editorial boards of several scientific journals; since 2007 she has served as co-editor for Childhood. A journal of global child research (Sage). Her research interests include childhood in social theory, philosophy of science, feminist theory, intergenerational relations, and intersections of gender and generation. She has published widely in national and international publications, and in several languages. Co-edited books (in English) include Alanen, L. & Mayall, B.
