BIOGRAPHY:

Jess Roberts is an associate professor of American literature in the department of English at Albion College in Albion, Michigan. Co-editor of Penguin’s Nineteenth Century American Poetry (1996), she is the author of several articles on nineteenth-century print culture and Civil War literature, most recently “Sarah Piatt’s Grammar of Convention and the Conditions of Authorship” which appears in the Cambridge Companion to Nineteenth-Century American Poetry (2011). She is currently working on two projects: one that surveys Sarah Piatt’s manipulations of the dramatic monologue, the other that examines Piatt’s acts of counting and accounting for the dead in her dead child poems.
