BIOGRAPHY:
Álvaro Fernández-Llamazares is an ethnoecologist interested in biocultural approaches to conservation. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Global Change and Conservation Lab (http://gcc.it.helsinki.fi), at the University of Helsinki (Finland). He has more than 25 months of in-depth ethnographic field experience with indigenous peoples and local communities in countries such as Bolivia, Costa Rica, Kenya and Madagascar. His research philosophy is rooted in interdisciplinarity and strives to connect global environmental discourses to matters of local relevance. His works have shown that indigenous knowledge systems can facilitate new ways of conceptualizing and understanding global sustainability. He strongly advocates for a better engagement of indigenous peoples and local communities in environmental governance.
