BIOGRAPHY:

Patricia K. Townsend is currently Research Associate at the State University of New York at Buffalo. She received her Ph. D. in anthropology from the University of Michigan (1969) based on fieldwork in the Upper Sepik region of Papua New Guinea among a lowland sago-using people. She returned to Papua New Guinea as Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Applied Social and Economic Research from 1980 through 1984. Subsequently she has done research in environmental anthropology as related to hazardous waste and mining, among other topics. She is author of Environmental Anthropology: From Pigs to Policies (Third Edition, Waveland Press, 2018) and Medical Anthropology in Ecological Perspective (with Ann McElroy, Sixth Edition, 2015).
