BIOGRAPHY:

Michael Lukin researches the musical folklore of the East European Jews, focusing on the Yiddish folksong, its aesthetics and formal characteristics, and its place in the regional cultural space. Since 1998, Lukin is the Yiddish music curator at the Jewish Music Research Center at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (www.jewish-music.huji.ac.il). He is currently participating in the research project lead by Prof. Zvi Mark of Bar-Ilan University devoted to studying the musical heritage of Hasidism, a religious movement originating in the Eastern Europe in the beginning of the 18th century. Lukin teaches courses in Jewish music at the Sapir Academic College and at the Bar-Ilan University, and teaches flute at the Hassadna Conservatory in Jerusalem.
