BIOGRAPHY:
Robert Appelbaum is Professor Emeritus of English Literature at Uppsala University, Sweden. Born in New York City, he was educated at the University of Chicago and the University of California, Berkeley. His many works include Terrorism Before the Letter: Mythography and Political Violence in England, Scotland and France, 1559-1642; The Aesthetics of Violence: Art, Fiction, Drama and Film; and The Renaissance Discovery of Violence, from Boccaccio to Shakespeare. He has been the recipient of awards from The Folger Shakespeare Library, The NHS, The British Academy, AHRC, the Leverhulme Trust, and Vetenskaprådet, and has been a visiting fellow at the Wesleyan University Center for the Humanities, The Stellenbosch Insitute for Advanced Study (South Africa), the University of Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Study (Finland), and the Sofia Centre for Advanced Study (Bulgaria).
