BIOGRAPHY:

Hal Gladfelder is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Manchester. His books include Criminality and Narrative in Eighteenth-Century England: Beyond the Law (Johns Hopkins, 2001) and Fanny Hill in Bombay: The Making and Unmaking of John Cleland (Johns Hopkins, 2012), and critical editions of Cleland’s Memoirs of a Coxcomb (Broadview, 2005) and John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera and Polly (Oxford World’s Classics, 2013). For OUP Handbooks Online he has written a critical-historical article on “Literature and Pornography, 1660-1800” (2013).
