BIOGRAPHY:

Derek is a lecturer in English literature at Cardiff University since 2017. Previously he has taught at Shakespeare’s Globe (London), Queen’s University Belfast, and the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). His first monograph, Shakespeare, Revenge Tragedy, and Early Modern Law: Vindictive Justice (Palgrave, 2016) examined revenge dramatists’ critique of early modern legal systems from a law and literature perspective. His latest research project is entitled “Shakespeare's Licence: The Power of Paperwork in Early Modern Literature and Culture”, with a focus on the relationship between literature and bureaucracy, discourses of authority, and practices of forgery. Recent articles include ‘The First Shakespearean Forgeries’ (Review of English Studies), and ‘Filling in the Blanks in Early Modern Drama’ (Huntington Library Quarterly).
