BIOGRAPHY:

John Lamphear is a Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Texas, Austin, where he formerly taught African and Military History. He is especially interested in the raiding war of East African pastoralists, amongst whom he lived and worked for several years. His publications include The Scattering Time: Turkana Responses to Colonial Rule (1992) and African Military History (2007), an edited collection of essays. He is currently working on a nineteenth century military history of East Africa and is also researching the early importation of firearms into that region. He raises Texas longhorn cattle on a small ranch near Austin.
