Introduction

This bibliography deals with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (hereinafter referred to as the “African Commission” or “commission”) and with the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (hereinafter referred to as the “African Court” or “ACtHPR”). These are the two institutional organs that have been established under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (hereinafter referred to as the “African Charter” or “ACHPR”), the regional instrument promoting and safeguarding fundamental freedoms across the African continent. This bibliography also offers a more general overview of the pan-African system for the protection of fundamental freedoms within the context of which these two organs operate and discharge their functions. Given that the two prevailing languages in Africa are English and French, this bibliography cites books and articles published in French, and it also cites some works in German.
