Introduction
Big data in organizations is often discussed with respect to the three primary characteristics of volume, velocity, and variety. Volume refers to the idea that the term “big data” is frequently associated with truly massive amounts of information (i.e., terabytes or even petabytes of information). Velocity refers to the notion that big data typically involve a continuous and often-rapid accumulation of data. Last, variety describes the fact that big data come in many forms and from many sources both within and outside the organization. For organizational scientists, big data present challenges that they have not traditionally confronted; namely, big data require a bigger research design and analytic toolbox.
Books
Books related to the topic of big data are numerous and are written both for scholarly and lay audiences. For current purposes, we summarize books that are likely to be of greatest interest to organizational researchers, including those that more generally address the topic of big data and those that are more specifically oriented toward organizational scientists. The first category (General) includes books that are written for broad audiences interested in understanding the fundamental aspects of big data. The second category (Specialized) includes those texts that specifically address how big data have or can be used by organizational researchers.
